  1. Breathe in, breathe out….cough splutter cough

    October 30, 2011 by jess

This week I met an English fellow who has been here for 6 years. We met thanks to his bull terrier – I love bullies, they have a bad rep but they’re great dogs. To those who brand them dangerous I reply: it’s never the breed, it’s the owner.

A great pic circulated via email a few years ago. The subject was: ‘Never leave your child alone with a dangerous dog’. I opened the email with a little trepidation only to find a fantastic shot of a bull terrier lying on her side next to a little kid who’d drawn all over her in coloured pens. Google ‘bull terrier and child’ and you’ll find it easily.

  2. big shout out to Delly, Muzz, Louis and Audrey for the amazing brownies

    October 23, 2011 by jess

I ate 3 before 10am. In my defence, the pollution outside is 'hazardous' so in the interests of my health I should not venture outside. Have to eat what's accessible in my apartment. Such a shame!

  5. And the weekend air quality is…HAZARDOUS

    October 23, 2011 by jess

Bless the Yanks and their hourly air quality report from the Embassy in Chaoyang. I have their App on my iPhone.

    from: http://www.wunderground.com/health/pm.asp

    US EPA (http://www.epa.gov/pmdesignations/faq.htm):

Particulate matter, or PM, is the term for particles found in the air, including dust, dirt, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. Particles can be suspended in the air for long periods of time. Some particles are large or dark enough to be seen as soot or smoke. Others are so small that individually they can only be detected with an electron microscope.

  6. It’s not the politics that’s red…it’s the tape. And banks specialise.

    October 13, 2011 by jess

Yesterday I spent 5 hours (that’s 5 ‘I -could-have-been-studying’ hours) running like a headless chook between the bank and visa centre. I went to the bank 4 times and the visa centre twice.

Three of my local friends pretty much tag-teamed each other, taking turns to help handle conversations with tellers and visa staff.

  7. Birds…WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?

    October 9, 2011 by jess

Trust me, there's a sparrow in this photo...just squint a bit.

It takes a few days of wandering around Beijing before their absence hits you. The sounds, smells and sights of the city are a big adjustment, so I suppose it’s not too surprising that with all of these sensory changes, I hadn’t really acknowledged the lack of bird life, until I actually saw my first bird.

  10. Apple store in Sanlitun

    October 6, 2011 by jess

    Apple store Sanlitun

Just yesterday I went into the Apple store in Sanlitun. I was a little early and there were maybe 20 people waiting outside for the doors to open. As we entered, staff (in Apple’s international uniform – blue shirts) lined either side of the entrance and clapped us into the store.

It was a little strange I must admit, but I suppose it reiterated the Apple way of things.
