  1. big shout out to Delly, Muzz, Louis and Audrey for the amazing brownies

    October 23, 2011 by jess

I ate 3 before 10am. In my defence, the pollution outside is 'hazardous' so in the interests of my health I should not venture outside. Have to eat what's accessible in my apartment. Such a shame!

  6. As I left my apartment complex this morning I half expected to see Simon Pegg running towards me with a cricket bat, being pursued by a group of zombies…it was that quiet in Beijing.

    October 1, 2011 by jess

I was actually a bit disappointed that didn’t happen. Not the zombie part, the Pegg part (am a bit of a fan).

Every morning as I leave my building I hear cars, cars and more cars, tooting of horns, music (usually accompanying some tai chi enthusiasts), strollers rattling along uneven pathways and a few little dogs barking….. Not today.

Today was National Day and although things were still open, there seemed to be significantly fewer people out and about (at least Sanyuanqiao way – my hood). Those that were out, were quieter and there was almost no horn tooting.  (more…)

  8. The strangest cheese sandwich of my life…

    September 18, 2011 by jess

I love my carbs. Love, love, love them. A friend of mine once called me a ‘chip-a-tarian’ because he swore I could live on hot chips. I love bread, pasta, rice noodles, potatoes, potatoes on pizza. If it’s complex and a carb, I’ll have it. All of it, thank you very much.

Today I went to the supermarket and bought a lovely little crispy baguette. I have butter and some lovely aged, sharp cheese at home, so was really looking forward to a little lunch back at the apartment. (more…)

  9. Shang-wow – part 2

    September 11, 2011 by jess

I type this blog from my apartment in Beijing. There are 3 hairy crabs (live, bound and in a plastic bag) on the bench by the kitchen sink. I am tempted to liberate them in some big, plush aquarium-esque centrepiece for the coffee table.

Time for a change of topic…

Shanghai delivered on all fronts. The hotel was beautiful, food was divine (truffle vego dumplings (more…)

  10. Shang-wow!

    September 7, 2011 by jess

Maybe it’s the luxurious feel of the Intercontinental Shanghai Expo (being accompanied to the room by front of house, the view from the room etc) and hitting all the glam spots in the 24 hours since arriving, but Shanghai feels very different from Beijing….and I like it. I like it a lot. (more…)
