I am the only one here. It’s National Day holiday week and this complex is a little quiet, but in truth, I don’t think it’s the holiday that’s responsible for the lack of customers, I think it’s the music.

Best True Blood synopsis…ever.
October 4, 2011 by jess
I’ve seen the series (the legit version, not a pirated copy) and don’t recall seeing the episode where ‘Sookie Bill was heavily put the one from behind’.

Today I had coffee next to a monk in Starbucks…(even monks need bad coffee)
October 4, 2011 by jess
The people on the other side of him were tourists and took his photo (with permission – well they asked by getting his attention, holding up a camera and raising their eyebrows). I felt for the poor guy, but then again I suppose I’m no better for taking a sneaky shot like the one above!
We had a rather stilted conversation about being vegetarian and feeding random cats on Beijing streets. He also gave me a gold Buddha card to put in my pocket to keep me safe. I’ve done a bit of googling about that and keep reading that this is usually a scam (in that once the card is given, tourists are often asked for donations). Well, I wasn’t asked for any dosh in return.
Maybe I am really starting to look the part of a poor, full-time student! Gawd. I’m beginning to wish he’d asked me for some cash!

The happiest dog in Beijing…?
October 3, 2011 by jess
This little guy is so damn happy.
He’s in dire need of a bath and is more in the grey spectrum on the pantone chart than the white one, but he cares not! I have seen him on 3 occasions running, then tumbling along one of Beijing’s most pristine strips of green grass (in front of a big office building).

As I left my apartment complex this morning I half expected to see Simon Pegg running towards me with a cricket bat, being pursued by a group of zombies…it was that quiet in Beijing.
October 1, 2011 by jess
I was actually a bit disappointed that didn’t happen. Not the zombie part, the Pegg part (am a bit of a fan).
Every morning as I leave my building I hear cars, cars and more cars, tooting of horns, music (usually accompanying some tai chi enthusiasts), strollers rattling along uneven pathways and a few little dogs barking….. Not today.
Today was National Day and although things were still open, there seemed to be significantly fewer people out and about (at least Sanyuanqiao way – my hood). Those that were out, were quieter and there was almost no horn tooting. (more…)
