I arrived at the Beijing International Airport around 1pm on a Tuesday. It was a rude shock to be settling into this sprawling foreign city, solo, no phone capability, no internet, a laptop without charge, just a cab driver, my 55kg of luggage, two seriously heavy coats (in 29 degree heat…hey, I’m prepping for end of year Winter) and some Chinese characters on my iPhone screen (a photo of some directions I’d been sent) to get me to the hotel…which didn’t have my reservation!
